A.L.i.C.E. Training

The staff of Maplewood Local Schools has recently completed the ALiCE program through Training Specifics Inc. The program is designed to give a person, or group of people, who may find themselves in a violent, life threatening situation, some mental and physical tools that could play a vital role in their survival.

In September we shared information with the public through our community night and now we have planned to train our students throughout the district. On Friday November 7th the elementary students will receive training that will focus on gun safety and how to barricade and evacuate if an intruder enters the building. This training is an essential part of our safety plan! If you have any questions or concerns please contact the office.

Building Visitation
Visitors are always welcome to our school. Persons visiting our school building are required to report to the office upon entering the building and receive a visitor’s or volunteer’s pass that allows you to go beyond the lobby. If you have not reported to the office and received a pass, we will have the right to ask you to leave the building.
Blizzard Bag Instructions

I want to thank all of our parents and families for your cooperation and support through this difficult period of severe cold and snow.  February 4th marked the first time that the Maplewood Schools has implemented the Blizzard Bag Program in order to help maintain our students academic progress during this winter season.  There was some confusion in the amount of time that your student will have to complete the assignments that were provided by their teachers.  All students will have up to 2 weeks to complete the assignments that were included in the Blizzard Bag.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact the school office.

Attendance is compulsory in the State of Ohio. Children are expected to attend school daily. Children must be in their classrooms by 8:50 to be counted present. Children may be absent from school for significant illness, family emergency, or for religious reasons only. Please attempt to schedule appointments after the end of the school day.
Parents/guardians are asked to call the elementary school office (330-583-2321) early on each day of the child’s absence to report and verify their knowledge of the absence. If the call-off is prior to school hours or the secretary is unavailable an automated service is available to record the message.
2013 Ohio High Performing School of Honor and School of Promise!
Maplewood Elementary School was recently named A High Performing School of Honor from the Ohio Department of Education. This honor, which was only awarded to 37 school buildings state-wide, recognizes Ohio schools that have sustained or increased student achievement over time.

In addition to being named a School of Honor, Maplewood Elementary was also named a 2013 School of Promise. This distinction recognizes schools that have closed the achievement gaps for students in reading and mathematics. This marks the 3rd time Maplewood Elementary has earned this honor.

Ohio Changes District Performance Evaluation Processes

Ohio is changing how it evaluates and communicates the academic performance of its schools and districts. Schools and districts will no longer receive labels like “Excellent” or “Continuous Improvement.” In its place, they will receive letter grades on several measures in the same way a student receives grades for his or her classes.
