Maplewood High School Senior Takes Flight — Almost Like a Rocket

Maplewood High School senior Luke Shipman recently achieved a major milestone in his aviation journey, completing his first solo flight in a Cessna 172 on October 29, 2025, at the Geauga County Airport in Middlefield, Ohio.

Luke’s passion for aviation began in 2019 when he attended the Summer Youth Aviation Camp (SYAC), a program hosted by EAA Chapter 5 (Experimental Aircraft Association). The camp introduces middle school students to aviation through hands-on experiences and mentorship from local pilots and aviation enthusiasts. At the time, Luke was an 11-year-old sixth grader, eager to learn more about flight.

Since that first summer, Luke has continued to pursue his aviation dreams. He followed in his grandfather’s footsteps, began flight training with a Certified Flight Instructor at the Geauga County Airport, and earned the honor of being selected as EAA Chapter 5’s Ray Aviation Scholar. He also successfully completed the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) exam for pilot training prior to his solo flight.

EAA Chapter 5 members Sherry and Tim Niederkorn, who help organize youth aviation programs in Middlefield, have known Luke since his first summer camp experience and shared their excitement at seeing how far he’s come.

“Luke has worked so hard over the years,” said Sherry Niederkorn, SYAC Administrator. “To see him solo in a Cessna is a full-circle moment for everyone who’s been a part of his journey.”

Congratulations, Luke! Your dreams have truly taken off, and while it may have been a Cessna, it’s pretty close to a rocket in our book! 🚀✈️
